5 steps to process Covid trauma

Updated: Apr 18, 2022

"Life doesn't get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient".

Is it the most appropriate quote for these days? I believe so.

As we celebrated the sad 2 years anniversary of the official start of the unprecedented COVID crisis, I remember that day as it was yesterday. I cried so much, because I could feel that life was never going to be the same, and that something deep and so serious was happening. With my family in Europe, I was wondering when/if I would see them again...I am thankful we didn't get the preview of what the following 2 years were about to be.

So much happened on a societal level, unforeseen traumatizing events for the collective, especially in the US... and when we thought things were getting better, well here we are with another worldwide crisis, somehow possibly more concerning than the one we just went through. If you're feeling the COVID trauma fatigue, it is absolutely normal. This is a trauma anniversary that I believe is important to honor.

What can we do?

Lead #1 - Acknowledge it

First, acknowledge it. We've all lived this crisis as a trauma, on different levels for each individual. Many of us can still be struggling with PTSD, stress, anxiety, depression, and it is nothing to be ashamed of

Tip #2 - Process the feelings

Journaling, therapy, arts, verbal reflection, reflecting inward, but also in groups to reminds ourselves that we are not alone in this. We've all been affected in some way

"Man has never made any material as resilient as the human spirit" – Bernard Williams

Tip #3 - Lean into gratitude

Implementing a gratitude practice - through meditation or journaling, finding the positive outputs and appreciating the evolution of the situation compared to the beginning, and the presence of the loved ones that are still there.

Who knew we were so resilient?

Tip #4 - Mix it up

Laugh. As it still is the best medicine, and best way to trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals.

Tip #5 - Head to the Spa

Of course, selfcare in all its forms, including Spa & Wellness practices, will help to relieve physical and mental stress.
